Gateway to Play!

This setup is not for beginners, as the assembly requires a little custom work and a good amount of patience. But if you've already got your C&C Cage on a stand, you're already a Cagetopian Graduate. Congratulations! You get grids. The BEAUTY of the C&C world -- when done right and properly with 14" strong, square grids -- is that the sky is the limit on what you can do with them. And this setup is worth the effort!

Done right, this addition can add a whole new dimension to your guinea pigs' quality of life, exercise, and enjoyment as well as giving you a whole new way to interact and observe them.

We've engineered this solution with multiple requirements in mind! We actually have experience using this and similar items. We are NOT a 'if I build it, it will work company.' There are many considerations to take into account. That is what sets Cagetopia apart from everyone else.

Features of the Gateway to Play design

It starts on the INSIDE of the cage

Rather than cutting the cage wall to create an opening, we leave the cage whole, replace a grid and use any one of several options that start at the top of the coro wall.

Why this works?

We use a Piggy Perch on the inside of the cage as the platform to exit the cage. This is an easy ramp up to just the 6-inch coro wall height. Guinea pigs are comfortable with this low-incline ramp. Then with this design, they simply continue through the Portal and can exit on the outside at that same incline level. They see what looks like part of their cage as they move forward, which gives them a continued sense of safety and comfort as they venture out. The inside Perch ramp is the same angle and feel as the outside Gateway-to-Play ramp helping their sense of familiarity during exploring.

The outside platform

This can become a favorite hangout spot in addition to a step on the journey to the floor play area.

In fact, you can modify this design such that the platform is the goal and you don't bother with the ramp to the floor and just make this a full grid lookout platform!

Make it even more inviting?

Whether you decide to make the outside platform as shown or a destination itself (Full grid not Portal grid with the final ramp), covering it will make it all the more inviting for your explorers. It's as easy as just clipping some fleece (like a Fleece Flipper Case from the Market) to the top wall grid and the outer platform grid, providing a tent-like feel over the platform.

Enhance the Play Center with Fleece

If cut up a Fleece Forest (the easiest way to go), you can add the strips to the Play Center and you can leave them in even though you need to remove and reinstall the Play Center as you desire. They help provide better visual reference points for helping your guinea pig feel more secure.

Piggy Summer Fun!

Give your piggies awesome cage enrichment INSIDE your current cage! This Cagetopia Creative setup is a new spin on our Lookout Lounge. The Lookout Lounge needs at least another 7 inches of length outside your current cage. If you are tight on space and can't go longer, the new MINI MEZZANINE is a great way to expand your cage without giving up easy cleaning access or visibility of your guinea pigs.

Your pigs will LOVE hanging out in the Mini Mezzanine. Two guinea pigs will fit nose-to-nose or any other positions they prefer.

Do you have a BULLY PIGGIE?

If you have a guinea pig at the low end of the totem pole in their social heirarchy, the MINI MEZZANINE can provide excellent respite from being picked on by other piggies. A piggie is well protected from others given the design of the space.

Mini Mezzanine

Putting the Mini Mezzanine together is really quite easy! Using the Ledge Grids, you'll want the shorter end to slide in-between the coroplast of the base and the grid of the base. Secure the the Ledge Grid to the base grid by going one grid square in from each end of the ledge grid and zip-tying the two together. PLEASE NOTE, when zip-tying the ledge grid to the base, zip-tie at a diagonal angle, this creates an even stronger hold and ensures the best stability. To attach the Mini Moon Grid, line up the base of the Mini Moon Grid UNDER the Ledge Grids, you'll want to get as close to the center as possible, and attach using the zip-ties and the same diagonal attachment style.

To attach the ramps, first attach 2 of the Short Half Grids to the edge of the Ledge Grids on either side of the Mini Moon Grid. Next take the ramps and zip-tie them to the Half Short Grids through the circular holes punched in each corner, top and bottom.

Before you can rest the base of the Lookout Lounge on top of the Ledge grids, we highly recommend taping the back corners together, just to ensure no debris gets through the small slats in the corners.

Finally, to create the canopy take a Short Half Grid and insert it into the horizontal space of the connector in the corner and to the middle connector. Zip-tie at each end and to the corner to keep in place. Repeat on the other side and to finish off, drape some Fleece over top to create a cozy space!

Celebrate Independence Day Wheekend in this simple yet enriching cage experience for your guinea pigs. With just a couple of simple additions you can give your guinea pigs a new spot to hang out on and under. And with the drop-down wall, you can sit on the floor and better hang out with your piggies!

Piggy Platform

With primarily two Quarter Round Grids and a Ramp, you can recreate this versatile and engaging piggy platform.

It allows for great visibility for you while still providing them with a sense of security and privacy.
The half-height ramp is safe without extra walls needed.
You can place it anywhere along the circumference of the Quarter Round Grid that works for you.
When you put it in the middle, you give your piggies a little tunnel to run around and explore for more fun.
The under-platform area is a good hidey spot for them
The under-platform area is not too deep so it's easy access for cleaning.

Win/win/win!

DROP-DOWN or SWING-OPEN WALL

Either of these options provide great access to your piggies, especially if you might be sitting or playing on the floor. It's an improved reach for younger folks or if you are sitting down.

Which way to go?

Do you have loft?
If you have LOFT, especially a wide offset loft, the Drop-Down wall provides much more strength to your structure.
Complex Structure?
If your cage has tension applied on the grids with any special additions, it's generally better to use the Drop-Down walls as the lower part of the wall provides continuous strength.
Need ramp access?
Do you want to cut down the wall for ramp access? If so, the Swing-Open door would allow you to cut the coro wall down if that is your intent.

Piggy Platform Structure

We don't currently have an exact coro cut-out for this platform yet (coming next month), but it's super simple. You can trace the Quarter Round Grid on any firm, cut-able material you might have. Even Cardboard would work as they pretty much are not going to potty on this platform. Then you cover this with fleece for them. You can cut it with some short walls on the straight ends or just make it flat.

All you need to keep them from pottying out the corner walls are some simple squares of fleece cut out and clipped to the grid walls.

Use 2 12"x9" OR 1 24"x9" rectangle(s) of fleece to "line" the back cage wall. You can attach the fleece by using 2 of the 1.25" Hinges cut in half along the connecting 'hinge' to have 4 single clasps (make sure any excess plastic from the "hinge" is trimmed).

We overlapped the two pieces of fleece in the back corner by 1 grid to prevent any debris falling to the floor. To secure the fleece to the grid wall (2 clasps per wall or 1 for overlap) count up 4-5 grid squares from the bottom of the Platform and drape the fleece over the grid. Then push clasp teeth down over the fleece and the grid. Complete by tucking the fleece lining under the fleece padding for the floor of the Platform. Easy to remove and wash when needed and keeps the floor space behind the Piggy Platform clean.

Making our Cagetopia No-Sew Fleece Items

We'll have more instructions and patterns for this coming soon. But in the meantime, here is a guide.

To create our D.I.Y. fleece covers for the Piggy Platform (both top and bottom covers are the created the same way) you'll need 4 pieces of fleece and sharp scissors (we recommend fabric scissors). Begin by cutting the 4 pieces of fleece to the shape of the Quarter-Round Grid plus an extra 1.5" on all sides. Pair and line up the pieces up to create a top and bottom, make sure they're as aligned as possible!

You can use fabric clips or clothes pins, whatever you have on hand to hold them together. Along the perimeter of the fleece make a 1" cut into the fabric every 1"-1.5" along the fabric. The wider the space between cuts, the larger the fringe and knots will be.

All these cuts will "pair up", top piece of fringe to bottom piece of fringe, to be knotted together to create the fringe along the perimeter of the fleece lining. Be sure to add a coro or plastic or cardboard liner to act as the floor of the Quarter-Round Grid! Otherwise they could to fall through or get caught the square grids!

Executive Retreat

Continuing on with our black and white theme, we thought we go with a bit of an understated, yet different look for our Executive Retreat theme. With the additiol of a couple of specialty grids, we were inspired to fashion this cool tree that is as much for you as it is for your piggies. You don't have to color within the lines, so to speak. You can give your cage more dimensionality without sacrificing cleanability or access.

This new layout is a dream for piggys that love to zoom or go exploring for pit stops. This setup boasts the new Piggy Promenade™ and several new fleece products.

Truth be told, we, the Pit Crew -- (our little Cagetopia team of Teresa, Holli and Leonor) had entirely too much fun creating this configuration for you. And yet, everything was in consideration of keeping everything easily accessible and easy to clean. And of course, safe for your piggies, too.

Raceway Setup

This setup is not for beginners of C&C Cages, but if you are looking for ideas to enhance your existing setup, there are plenty here! More setup details coming soon.

For the main event, our Piggy Promenade™ makes creative use of our Ramps, Ledge Grids, and Lookout Lounge.

Our Skinny Grids provide extra safety needed at the ramp. At least one is needed if you don't have a covered cage due to the raising of the ramp angle.

The Corner Kitchen is a must in this exact layout as the Cavy Cafe doesn't allow enough ramp exit and run-around room. We've used a Large cage for this set up, but if you have an XL or Jumbo cage, you can easily use your Cavy Cafe.

Additionally, this set up shows a 6-inch wall base. A high-back wall would be in the way of securing the ledge grids.

For the fleece, we recommend using Fleece Flippers Cases and folding them in half to cover the Lookout Lounge and the two extra ramps.

With our new, improved angle-cut ramps that give the guinea pig easier access at the bottom. For this setup, we opted to interlace fleece strips through the openings, effectively preventing debris from slipping through.

Wall Wraps™

Looking to add some style to your cage? Or maybe you're ready for a color change but not ready to order a new Coroplast base? Wall Wraps™ are designed to be draped over the coroplast walls and tucked right under any liner or flipper you have for your base to hold it in place. Easy to install and easy to take apart when the time comes to wash! They will come in 15" widths with a thin insert in the hems to help give a great look, especially over time with multiple washings. You can cut them in half, like we did here, to alternate colors.

Fleece Weavers™

A new way to reuse fleece and grids you may have laying around from previous set ups! Why not add a little bit of personality with this easy DIY. We use strips of fleece, the Flippin' Fun Futon's fringe topper, and zip ties to create smaller checkered flags for the start and finish line of our race track. The best part about Fleece Weavers is that it provides endless possibilities to decorate your cage in items and fabrics you know are guinea pig approved. Need a COVER?

Something to consider when covering this cage is that when the Ledge Grids are added, it raises the loft ramp to an angle the regular cover won't clear. So you need to use SKINNY GRIDS for slightly higher walls that will clear the loft ramp wall. Remember one skinny grid would be needed for each grid length of the base that needs to be covered. Our 2x4 Large cage with the Loft and Lookout Lounge needs 6 skinny grids. A 2x6 Jumbo cage with loft would need 10 skinny grids.

It's important to note that this cover will not be a perfect fit over the entirety of the cage. The Lookout lounge has it's own canopy, but because the skinny grids need to be added at the top, there will be about a 2 inch gap that won't be covered where the canopy cover for the lounge ends and where the grid cover begins.
The cover is just like the LARGE/NARROW LOFT cover, plus 3 Short Half grids need to be added for the Bump Loft. Add a pack of zip ties to your order to be sure.

You'll just do the overlapping of the loft grids a bit differently. Follow the Wide Loft cover assembly, but just use the half grids for the back half. Also, if you are adding a cover, you should note we don't show using connectors along the top of the skinny grids as they aren't really necessary. You'll need to make sure that the wall is solid enough to have the cover flip open, so you'll need to consider adding 7 connectors, or due to the short span, you can also get away with just using zip ties there.

Also note that if you add a cover, you'll want the Under Cover Canopy rather than the regular Canopy.

Cavy Club House

The Cavy Club House setup is a continuation of our previous Bump Loft layout.

Peter Pig and his lost boys are ready for some piggy adventuring!

The Bump Loft

The Bump Loft is a cage base extension added onto a Narrow Loft. Please visit the Bump Loft page for more setup details and images to give your piggies a LOT more space upstairs. It only takes another 7 inches of wall space and is self-supporting.

The Cavy Club House layout provides lots of action and fun for your guinea pigs -- great living enrichment. All the while -- as is the tradition of the Cagetopia brand -- it stays cleanable and accessible without having to do gymnastics or be a contortionist to clean your cage! LOL

Porch Patio, mid-cage

The Cavy Club house also features a Porch Patio in the middle of the cage, rather than at the traditional end of the cage. You can adjust the height reasonably by one inner grid hole from what we show here. You can make it a little lower if you prefer.

One Patio Ramp changed

The Porch Patio comes with an open side and two Porch Patio ramps and one Mini Moon Grid. For this layout, we cut the back wall down (easy to do with scissors) to create an opening along the back wall of the cage. We put the second Porch Patio ramp there. You can use just one Mini Moon Grid, or add another one to your order and double them up if you like, the way we did, if you want it super secure for your pigs. Most pigs are fine hopping down from the Porch Patio height when they choose, so it's not much of a safety hazard, but you know your pigs better than we do, so you do what works for you.

The ramp landing against the left-hand size of the cage (as shown) from the Patio to the floor is a little tight, but manageable by the pigs. There is plenty of play on your placement of the Patio and the Wonder Bars (included with the Patio) it sits on, so you can move it forward if you like to give more landing area in the back. You just give up a little square footage on the Patio for it. And if you elected to keep the regular Cavy Cafe kitchen, your front Patio ramp may land just in front of or on top of the lip of the kitchen. You could put some folded fleece over that if you like to compensate for it.

A Corner Kitchen

While we generally don't recommend a corner kitchen except for custom "L"-shaped cages in the corner because the space usage isn't as good, but the Corner Kitchen works well in this setup. It provides better run around flow for your guinea pigs. As the front ramp on the Porch Patio will land right in front of the traditional Cavy Cafe. You can work with that, but this is easier.

A fleece transition to the kitchen

Because we have the Corner Kitchen sitting ON TOP of the fleece bedding due to its shape rather then the fleece butting up next to the entrance, the lip is a little taller than desired. Our furry potatoes tend to like to plod over the lip rather than have to work at it too much, so we've added some folded fleece in front of the kitchen to make it easier for them to step into it.

I frequently put folded up fleece in front of my kitchens anyway, but it's more of a requirement when you put a kitchen on top of fleece. You can use any fleece, but I particularly love using our Fleece Flipper cases (on the Market) for this. They are the right size, don't bunch up, are extremely versatile, and have many other uses.

Fleece Forest on a Quarter Round Grid

We initially started with a regular Fleece Forest in the lower corner, but we were inspired to switch it out to a Quarter Round Grid for this setup, although the regular fleece forest is fine. We used a regular inner fleece forest piece, just be aware it's not 'flat' underneath the topper, but that doesn't matter. You can get the new topper on the Guinea Pig Market.

The CAVY CLUB HOUSE extra items needed

In addition to the large cage on a narrow loft with optional stand and bins, you will need:

This CAVY CLUB HOUSE design assumes you already have a Large 2x4 Grid Cage with Narrow Loft. We currently do not offer a loft size of 1.5 grids. We may later if there is enough demand, but for the moment, we are employing existing guinea pig cage company items. If you already have narrow loft, you just need to get the Medium to Large Extension Kit (with the connectors option on that item). Then add 4 Short Half Grids and probably a pack of zip ties.

For about $40 plus tax and shipping, your guinea pigs get greatly expanded space upstairs.

SOME DIY CONSTRUCTION NEEDED

The bump loft isn't a perfectly smooth base

To attach the extension to your loft, you detach the back rivets and fold the end wall down. Put extension atop the folded-down section. Secure the junction where the two pieces overlap with clear packing tape to ensure stability. If desired, create new holes in the extension for alignment with the rivet holes on the unfolded loft flap. The process will become clearer as you actually do it. Although a slight ridge may form due to the coro's thickness, causing an uneven surface, it's not a big deal. Since you'll line the loft with fleece, typically in two parts to fit the ramp cutout, any minor unevenness will be concealed and won't affect your guinea pig's comfort. The modification is beneficial despite these small imperfections.

Bump Loft PLUS

This Bump Loft layout maximizes good living space for a small cage. If you have another 7 inches of wall length to spare, your guinea pigs will thank you. Of course, if you have the space to do a wide loft here (16 inches instead of 7 inches), then you should definitely go with that instead. But sometimes space is precious, and maybe 7 inches is doable.

This approach is adaptable to all cage lengths, but we are focusing on the SMALL 2x3 grid C&C cage for now.

This bump loft design assumes you already have a Small with a Narrow Loft cage. We currently do not offer a loft size of 1.5 grids. We may in the future if demand is there, but right now, we are working with existing store items. And rather than having to buy a new loft if you already have one, you just need the Medium to Large Extension Kit (with the connectors option on that item). Then you just need to add 4 Short Half Grids and probably a pack of zip ties.

So, for around $40 plus tax and shipping, you've given your guinea pigs the great gift of more space!

SOME CONSTRUCTION REQUIRED

AND NOT a perfectly smooth loft base

Here's how it works: you remove the back rivets and FOLD DOWN the end wall of your current loft and sit the Extension piece on top of it. Then you'll want to TAPE UP the seam of the overlapped coro with clear packing tape. You may also want to punch new holes where you want them into the extension piece as well to use the rivet holes on the now opened up narrow loft flap. It will make more sense when you do it. But suffice it say, there will be tiny ridge (the width of the 4mm coro) and things may not sit perfectly flatly, but can be adjusted. So, you need to set your expectations appropriately. The loft needs to be covered in fleece anyway (usually in two sections to accommodate the inset ramp cutout), so the imperfect flooring won't matter or be at all noticeable to your critters. It's worth it.

Need a COVER?

The tricky aspect of covering this cage is that when you add the Patio, it raises the ramp angle and the regular cover won't clear it. So you need to ADD ONE MORE SKINNY GRID to your order to fill in the opening in the front center, for a slightly higher wall that clears the ramp.

But if you do have male guinea pigs, then you've probably already discovered that males really do need more space to help keep the peace. It's not a guarantee that bickering boars will get along better in a bigger cage, but you GREATLY increase the chances with this setup, especially if you pay attention to the nuances that help make it success, which are highlighted below.

This cage setup includes a Large (2x4 grid) Cage. We added suave and sophisticated accessories in the Ancient Hieroglyphs fleece collection from Guinea Pig Market for a swanky pad to call home.

A Large (2x4 grid) Cage is the minimum cage size for a pair of males or trio of females. An XL (2x5 grid) Cage is even better, if space allows.

The rectangular floor footprint needed for this cage is 30" wide x 76" long (2 1/2 feet by about 6 1/2 feet).

This simple Cagetopia STARTER KIT comes with the essentials to get you started with a solid foundation and your basic guinea pig cage structure needs. Keep it simple for now and let us guide you while you get your feet wet in the world of guinea pigs and C&C cages.

The Cagetopia Brand has all the products you will need to expand and build your piggy palace over time because most people's caging needs evolve. This is absolutely the best place to start! Other brand products are not compatible with ours, so start with a quality cage that is fully functional and adaptable. Expand and enhance as your’s and your piggies’ needs change.

You can't go wrong with the size! The Large (2x4 grids) Cage measures 2.5 feet by 5 feet -- when assembled and is the recommended square footage for a pair of females or a female with a neutered male and is the minimum cage size for a pair of males or trio of females.

"Can it be Covered," you ask?

YES! All of our cages can be covered. You can purchase the Covered Starter Kit version, or order the Cover– sold separately– later.

Please note that the Cagetopia Starter Kits include our Cavy Canopy. The Undercover Canopy comes with the Covered Starter Kit, but you would need to purchase this instead if you add a cover for functionality.

"You want it on a cage stand," you say?

We do recommend placing the cage on a stand or table top. It is more accessible for you to manage the daily responsibilities, and the pigs will be less intimidated by your size. We offer a Large Cage Stand that works with this setup. The stand is typically assembled first, but don’t let that deter you from getting it at a later date.

Upgrades such as enhancements and expansions for beauty and/or functionality are available any time through our website .

"Can you add an upper level" or “expand”, you ask?

YES! Perhaps you currently don’t have the amount of space you’d like or want an upper level later, rest assured that you can add a variety of upper levels or a Cagetopia Cage Extension down the road.

AS SHOWN, this cage is 7.5 FEET long (90 inches). IF you make it bigger by one grid, it will be almost 9 FEET long (about 105 inches). All C&C cages are 30" (2.5 FEET) wide.

Roomie Zoomie™ Wide Loop Loft Benefits

Double Ramps ~ allow for fast, full zoomies up and around the loft and are HIGHLY recommended for males who should always have escape routes. Providing two ramps ensures that bickering piggies have an easy way to retreat without getting trapped by the aggressor.
Step-Up Piggy Fitness ~ the additional exercise provided by going up and down the ramps is EXTREMELY BENEFICIAL. Especially for males, it helps keep those butt muscles toned which can help prevent impaction as they age. In addition, climbing helps ALL guinea pigs with their digestive systems, their internal organs, their stamina and strength and their overall health and happiness.
Easy Access When OFFSET ~ We strongly encourage that all Wide Lofts be OFFSET (positioned halfway over the edge of the cage by using our offset kit). This allows for easy cleaning and piggy retrieval under the loft. Without the optional Offset Kit, it's quite difficult to reach all the way under the wide loft when needed.

DIRECTIONS: On the front of the upper cage, fasten the Tall Half Grids into the plastic connectors instead of the full sized grids. This cage is recommended for 2-3 female guinea pigs or 2 male guinea pigs.

Lots of Pigs, Not a lot of Space?

This particular cage configuration is a personal favorite. It's got some great benefits but has a few trade-offs as well. It's beyond cute, but also provides some special functionality that might be a blessing for you and your piggies.

A GREAT WAY to add space in a compact area.
Say you need to give your pigs more room for exercise and enrichment, but you are limited on space. If you do not have the room for a nice Roomie Zoomie cage with a wide loft and two ramps, this will give you more than our Narrow Loft option because we don't recess the ramp openings. You set the Wonder Bars at your desired level mid-grid so you can get two levels out of one grid of height.
Dual ramps are EASY ACCESS for older or pudgy pigs.
These ramps can only be used when you set the Patio at mid-height. They easily bound up and down these ramps. The patio height is safe enough for the average pig to hop down from -- even without the ramps. The dual ramps lets your pigs do zoomies and stay fit.
GREAT for MALES or small groups
Dual ramps with additional level allows more freedom and escape when desired. One pig can't get trapped. Males should always have an escape route. This works well for adding more social enrichment.
HAY MUST BE LOOSE AND WELL STUFFED IN THE KITCHEN AREA
It's very important to put your big hay pile in the Kitchen Area to encourage them to use their potty area. This setup really needs you to stuff a lot hay there. That is ON TOP of disposable bedding. You'll need to change the hay more often -- like every 3rd day at the latest, preferrably every other day, as compared to just keeping fresh hay in a hay rack. So you need to be buying hay in reasonable bulk. Hay is NOT bedding and must be changed out regularly if you are doing hay piles. You could add a Small Hay Rack in addition, but the low profile won't allow a big hay rack in that area.
The pigs LOVE lounging and hanging out in the private hay pile.
They will potty more there which will help keep the rest of your cage cleaner. Be aware that you may not visually see them as much because they may spend more time there. They love it!
Too many pigs, too little space?
We show the larger Cavy Bistro kitchen on left end of this cage. When you're using hay piles, the bigger kitchen area is more forgiving. All accomplished on one level if you choose.
Easy-to-Clean
Unlike the regular ramps, these flip up easily and you can lift out the Patio to get to the Kitchen Area underneath. You just have to move one Wonder Bar out of the way to clean out the kitchen area. If you don't add the optional half-grids along the top, it's even easier. The Cavy Canopy can easily be the cover without the extra grids. The extra half-height grids allow more clearance and you could add a Fleece Forest there.
Note about the Ramps with the Cavy Bistro
The Cavy Bistro is 1 & 1/2 grids wide instead of the normal 1 grid Cavy Cafe. It allows for messier hay. The ramps either barely clear the edge of the Bistro or it leaves a little gap. It's no big deal for the pigs, but you can put a Potty Pad, a Plush Bed or some folded fleece at the landing to help the transition.
If you don't use the optional Half Grids on Top, get the Cavy Canopy or cover it.
The optional Half Grids around the Patio provide safety. But it makes it a little harder to reach over for cleaning. You can keep it strictly at one level if you also cover that area. They really love the Cavy Canopy or Picnic Awning as a low cover because, like the Kitchen area, it's darker and cozy for them.

Introducing our NEW Porch Patio!

Our NEW Porch Patios are made with only THREE sides intact, and are designed to sit lower in the cage. The two ramps allow piggies to lap around in a circle for short "zoomies". This is a great option for older piggies or those who may be more hesitant to use ramps.

Cleaning underneath the patio is a breeze! The ramps are attached with clear hinges so they easily flip out of the way when needed. You can also add some of our custom Swing Grids for a great, easy-access cover!
