Emma's Evolution, Part 1: The Window Cage

From a Tea Party-inspired first build to a bay window cage for three groups of piggies

When Emma first wrote to us in December 2023, she had three young boys, Poly, Roucky and Touffy, and a hand-drawn plan. "I don't draw very well," she warned us. She'd spent hours on our site, and like a lot of new builders, she wasn't sure how her piggies' needs would change. That turned out to be the best reason to build with C&C.

Chapter 1: The first build

In our walk before you run plan, Emma started out with our Roomie Zoomie Wide Loft Loop cage which let her active young males have great freedom for burning off zoomie energy running up down and around. One guy can't block the entrance for another, helping to keep the peace. We highly recommend this setup for males or even diva females because it allows more escape hatches when they get a little worked up with each other.

Emma's first build: an XL 2x5 Cage with a Roomie Zoomie Wide Loop Loft on a stand with storage bins underneath.

This 2x5 grid lofted cage required about 76" or about 6 1/2 feet of wall length.

Chapter 2: When the herd changed

Three boys don't always stay friends. In fact, 3 males at peace is a rare combo in the long run. After her oldest boy, Poly, spent time at the vet and recovering apart, the reunion didn't go well. Emma did what C&C makes possible: she took the cage apart and rebuilt it. Poly went into his own "mezzanine" for a while, set at an angle above the 2x5. Meanwhile three girls had joined the family, so the habitat now had to give three groups their own space.

The result (a 2x4 plus a 2x5) stretched across her bay window on a 12 foot wall:

  • Lofts and ramps at both ends give each group its own upstairs.
  • Kitchens in the middle keep hay and bedding contained.
  • Bins under the whole run hold all the supplies.

But Poly still needed a friend, and Emma was already dreaming up her next layout.
